# Defining Sources

{% hint style="warning" %}

## Sources and Partitioning

Sources can be partitioned.

* If a source is created in a particular partition and CMDB items are also partitioned, CMDB items created from the external resources discovered on this source are assigned the source’s partition.
* If a source is partitioned, but CMDB items are not partitioned, the CMDB items created from the external source are not partitioned.
* If a source is not partitioned, the CMDB Items created from the external resources can inherit the partition through the template applied to them (if a partition is assigned to the template).
 {% endhint %}
