Asset Management - Asset Lifecycle Status
You can define different lifecycle statuses, which Analysts can use when creating an inventory or software product.
Asset Lifecycle Management in ITIL and ITSM frameworks refers to the comprehensive approach to managing the life cycle of an organization's IT assets from their acquisition or creation through their operational use, maintenance, and eventual disposal or retirement. This process is aimed at maximizing the value of IT assets to the business while managing costs and risks associated with these assets.
In ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library), Asset Lifecycle Management falls under the Service Asset and Configuration Management (SACM) process. SACM is concerned with maintaining information about Configuration Items (CIs) required to deliver an IT service, including their relationships. This includes managing the lifecycle of all assets, ensuring that assets are properly controlled, and that accurate and reliable information about these assets is available when and where it is needed.
In ITSM (IT Service Management), Asset Lifecycle Management is a critical component that supports various processes and practices. It provides a structured framework for managing the IT asset portfolio, including hardware, software, and informational assets across different stages of their lifecycle:
Planning and Acquisition: Identifying business needs, planning for procurement or development of assets, and executing the acquisition.
Deployment: Installing, configuring, and integrating assets into the operational environment.
Operation and Maintenance: Ensuring assets are available and perform as expected, including ongoing support, maintenance, and updates.
Retirement and Disposal: Decommissioning assets that are no longer needed, in a manner that is safe, secure, and compliant with regulatory requirements.
Effective Asset Lifecycle Management in both ITIL and ITSM involves processes and tools for tracking and analyzing asset performance, costs, and risks throughout the asset's life. It ensures that assets are utilized effectively, contributing to the organization's overall efficiency and value creation.
Creating an Asset Lifecycle Status
Before you start
You must have CMDB Setup enabled within your General Access Security Role in order to configure any CMDB administration settings. Depending on if/how your system is partitioned, ensure that you are in the correct partition.
Select the Menu button , then Admin, and then select System Administration. The System Administration window is displayed. In the Explorer pane expand CMDB.
Select Asset Management - Asset Lifecycle Status. The Asset Lifecycle Status window displays all current statuses.
Select the New icon. A new row is added to the browse table.
In the Status list, type the name or description of the new asset lifecycle status.
To specify a default status, select the checkbox in the Default column. (You may like to adjust the column widths to see all of the columns.)
There can only be one default status.
This is used if no other status is selected in the relevant details window.
Repeat for each asset lifecycle status you want to create.
Select to save the changes. Provide the Change Reasons if prompted to do so.
