CMDB Item Physical Statuses

You can define physical statuses which Analysts can use to indicate the current status of a configuration item, for example, whether it is On Order, In Repair, or in Testing.

A CMDB Item Physical Status in Alemba Service Manager is a crucial aspect that denotes the current physical state or condition of an item recorded in the Configuration Management Database (CMDB). This feature is instrumental in effectively managing and monitoring the various stages through which an IT asset progresses during its lifecycle within an organization. By assigning and maintaining accurate physical statuses, teams can ensure comprehensive visibility and control over their IT infrastructure, which in turn facilitates better decision-making, compliance, and resource optimization.

Physical statuses could range from 'In Service', indicating an asset is actively being used, to 'Decommissioned', signifying that the asset is no longer in operation. Implementing a robust system of physical statuses within the CMDB aids in:

  • Asset Tracking: Enables precise tracking of each IT asset's current state, enhancing the ability to manage assets efficiently.

  • Maintenance and Upgrades: Helps in identifying which assets require maintenance or upgrades, based on their status.

  • Compliance: Assists in ensuring that assets are compliant with organizational policies and standards, primarily through the management of their lifecycle stages.

  • Risk Management: By understanding the physical state of IT assets, organizations can better assess and mitigate risks associated with asset downtime or failures.

  • Cost Optimization: Facilitates the identification of underutilized or obsolete assets, potentially leading to cost savings through redeployment or asset decommissioning.

To achieve these benefits, it is essential for organizations using Alemba Service Manager to diligently define, implement, and maintain a clear and comprehensive set of physical statuses for CMDB items, aligned with organizational objectives and IT management practices.

Best Practices for Configuring CMDB Item Physical Statuses

  • Simplicity: Keep status names simple and easy to understand. Avoid overly technical jargon that might not be clear to all users.

  • Relevance: Create statuses that are relevant to your organization's needs. Avoid creating unnecessary statuses that do not add value to your CMDB.

  • Documentation: Document each status and its intended use. This helps in maintaining clarity and ensures that everyone understands what each status represents.
