Service Cost Types

You can define service cost types (for example, Pay Per Use, Subscription, or No Charge Back) which Analysts can assign to Service Action and Service Bundle entities. The Cost Type appears in the Catalog Information section of the service entities.

Scenarios and Examples of Using Service Cost Types

  1. Cloud Service Management: For a cloud service offering, you may use the Pay Per Use cost type to bill customers based on their consumption of computing resources.

  2. Software Subscription Services: For software as a service (SaaS) offerings, the Subscription cost type can be applied where customers pay a recurring fee for access to a software product.

  3. Internal IT Services: Within an organization, some IT services may be provided to different departments without direct chargebacks. In such cases, the No Charge Back cost type would be appropriate to track the provision of these services without affecting internal billing.

  4. Project-Based Services: For services provided on a project basis, such as consultancy or implementation services, you might create a custom Service Cost Type named "Fixed Project Fee" to capture the agreed-upon costs associated with completing a project.

  5. Support and Maintenance Services: A Subscription or a tiered Pay Per Use cost type could be utilized for support and maintenance services, where customers pay for different levels of support or for the amount of support time used within a billing period.

Creating a Service Cost Type

Before you start

You must have CMDB Setup enabled within your General Access security role in order to configure any CMDB administration settings. Depending on if or how your system is partitioned, ensure that you are working in the correct partition.

  1. Select the Menu button, then Admin, and then select System Administration. The System Administration window is displayed. In the Explorer pane expand CMDB.

  2. Select Service Cost Types to open the window. A browse table is displayed, listing all of the existing service cost types.

  3. Select the New icon. A new row is added to the browse table.

  4. In the blank row, type the name of the new Service Cost Type.

  5. Repeat for each Service Cost Type you want to create.

  6. Select to save the changes. Provide the Change Reasons if prompted to do so.

You can change the display order of the service cost types in the table. To do so, select a status and use or to change its position in the table.
